Sisters’ Committee
The sisters’ committee came into existence over 30 years ago. Its primary function in the past has been to assist the brothers’ committee and cooperate in matters pertaining to the Islamic Society of Norman and the Norman community at large. Currently, the sisters’ committee acts as a link between the masjid administration and the women of the community, ensuring that their specific concerns and needs are addressed. The committee strives to create an uplifting and welcoming environment where women feel empowered to attend and participate fully in masjid activities. There are 4 pillars that the committee focuses on:
1. Spiritual and Educational Support
- We are responsible for hosting classes on topics relevant to women, such as parenting, women’s issues, mental health issues, and improving Islamic knowledge and faith practices.
2. Social and Community Engagement
- The committee works in collaboration with other organizations like ICNA, MSA, CAIR, ISGOC to organize social events throughout the year. For example, Interfaith Iftar, open house, community picnics and inviting guest speakers.
3. Leadership and Empowerment
- We strive to train and mentor upcoming female leaders within the masjid, providing women to become volunteers, committee members and future leaders in the broader society.
4. Advocacy for Sisterhood
- We address important needs of the families within the community through fostering personal connections and staying committed and engaged with our community.
In order to strive to better each pillar, the committee is broken down into 3 subcommittees alongside other leadership positions. The positions are:
- Ameera (Asma Mudassir)
- Secretary (Nusrat Yussouf)
- Community Liaison (Zoha Qureshi)
- Education Subcommittee Chair (Summayah Anwar)
- Dawah Subcommittee Chair (Tazeen Maududi)
- Social Subcommittee Chair (Amna Tahir)
